Chapter Eleven

Serena fought back a smile as she glanced over at Ellis, who looked nervous about crossing through the portal. She had moved through portals several times but had never made her own. It was just as simple as walking through a doorway, but she understood why it was strange to him. Wolf Shifters didn't have those kinds of abilities.

As they stepped through the portal, they turned back, Serena lifted her hand, tracing the rift's edges. Slowly, it began to shut until all the forest sounds were gone, and they were left with the dark caves all around them. Almost instantly, Serena could feel the dark magic hit her straight in the chest. She put her hand to her breast and trickled her fingers across it, noticing that it didn't hurt her quite as bad as it had the first time.

Ellis rolled his head back and forth and curled his lip. "What's that burning feeling? It feels like I'm on fire. Wait… I know this feeling."

Serena nodded at him. "You first felt it when you were a small child, the day your parents were killed. You didn't tell anybody, you were too afraid."

Ellis looked down at the ground and then back up at Serena. "I saw your life too. I felt every emotion you have ever felt in the span of about three seconds. I'm surprised I didn't explode."

Serena smirked. "I felt yours too, so it was pretty much a blank slate the whole time."

Ellis rolled his eyes and chuckled, looking around them. "These are the caves Aaron is in? Why's it so quiet? I thought for sure the moment we stepped in here, there'd be dark magic all over us."

Serena shook her head. "I'm not sure. It's harder for my senses to reach out here because they're pushing against the wall of dark magic. These caves are deep and extensive, and I haven't been here since I was a kid. It's possible that I created a portal into the wrong side of the caves."

"So, we may not actually die from dark magic, but instead from roaming aimlessly through these dark, dank caves until we both die from starvation or dehydration. Got it."

"You did just see me make a portal, right?" Serena asked. "Let's just move forward. I found Aaron once, and I can find him again."

Ellis nodded at Serena and walked ahead of her, but just enough to protect her if anything came streaming toward them. It was hard to see as they walked, and Serena lit a small bit of magic in her hand. In an instant, her magic had grown so much that she didn't realize how easy it had become. On top of that, there was no biological yearning for her to be in the ocean. While, of course, she was in love with the sea, her mermaid felt as if she didn't need the salty water for survival. As if she could stay on two feet for as long as she wanted.

Serena pushed the thought
